     What is the Cyclops L used for?  The Cyclops L is a handheld, non-contact pyrometer from LAND for accurate spot temperature readings of hot targets from 200°C to 3,000°C depending on the model. Backed by over 75 years of measurement expertise, it's a portable reference instrument that operators carry to the process for spot checks, audits and verifying fixed sensors. With internal storage for 9,999 readings, Bluetooth connectivity and traceable calibration, the Cyclops L is trusted as a portable calibration reference across steel, glass, foundry and heat treatment industries.
     What is the difference between the 100L, 160L and 390L? The Cyclops L series includes three models optimized for different applications: the 100L (600–1400°C) is the general-purpose industrial workhorse for most hot processes; the 160L (200–1600°C) extends to higher temperatures and is ideal for steel and glass applications; and the 390L (900–3000°C at 1 µm wavelength) is specifically tuned for molten metal and high-temperature furnace work. Each model uses a dedicated wavelength and optical system matched to its target temperature range for best-in-class accuracy.
     How accurate is the Cyclops L? The Cyclops L delivers reference-grade accuracy of ±0.5% of reading plus 1°C—precise enough that it's frequently used as the calibration reference for fixed pyrometers on the production line. The high-quality optics, precise sighting system and traceable calibration ensure consistent, reliable readings that engineers and quality teams can trust for process validation and equipment verification. 
     Does it include data-logging software? Yes—the Cyclops L works with LAND's  Cyclops Logger software for PC and mobile devices, enabling readings to be captured, logged, timestamped and reviewed for trend analysis and quality documentation. The instrument itself stores up to 9,999 readings internally, which can be transferred via USB or Bluetooth. This makes building a complete measurement history and generating audit-ready reports straightforward. 
     Can it be calibrated on-site? The Cyclops L is factory-calibrated by LAND using traceable blackbody sources and standards, ensuring accuracy you can trust for critical measurements. Rather than field calibration, recalibration is performed through LAND's service network to maintain traceability to national standards. This calibration traceability is exactly why the Cyclops L is specified as a portable reference pyrometer for verifying fixed sensors and meeting audit requirements. 

    Which wavelength should I choose?

    As a general rule for a monochromatic pyrometer, you should choose the shortest wavelength that is able to measure the required temperature, This is because the relationship between the intensity of infrared radiation and object temperature is strongest at short wavelengths, thereby reducing the uncertainty associated with changes in emissivity.

    For example, C100L (1.0 µm), C160L (1.6 µm) and C390L (3.9 µm) can all measure an object at 800 °C. However the C100 will give the most accurate measurement.

    Two models are available whose wavelengths have been chosen for specific applications. C055L operates at 0.55 µm and is designed for measurements of liquid metals. It features a Meltmaster mode which uses a special algorithm to provide a stable temperature measurement in the presence of sparks, smoke and other features which can produce sudden changes in the reading of a conventional pyrometer.

    The C390L operates at a wavelength of 3.9 µm, which has been specifically chosen for furnace temperature measurements. This is because flames do not emit radiation at this wavelength, ensuring that the readings are unaffected by flame interference.

    What is the smallest item I can measure with Cyclops?

    Cyclops C055L measures a 28 mm diameter area at any distance between 1 m and 5 m.

    Other models have a minimum spot size of 5 mm at a distance of 1 m.

    What can I do if the measured object is too bright for comfort? Excessively bright objects can affect C100L as it can measure temperatures as high as 3000 °C. It is available in two versions, either 1F (with one filter to reduce the intensity of visible light) and 2F (with two filters, providing a strong reduction in intensity). A removable dark filter is also available which can be placed over the lens in place of the standard clear protection window.
    The 1F model is the most flexible option. It can be used from 600 to 1400 °C with the clear protection window and from 1400 to 3000 °C with the dark filter.
    The 2F model can be used from 600 to 1800 °C without changing the filter, so it is best suited to applications such as glass melt tanks where temperatures between 1200 °C and 1800 °C are common. It can also be used up to 3000 °C with the dark filter.
    Can I use Cyclops in a hot environment?  Cyclops is rated for operation from 0 to 50 °C, so it can be used in most places the operator can work without suffering heat stress. A reflective, thermally-insulating jacket is available to protect the instrument from high levels of radiative heating
    What I/O is available?

    Cyclops can be connected to a PC or Android mobile device for data display and transfer of logged data. Both Bluetooth and USB mini connections are available.
